Deep in the heart of Jersey City, nestled between Summit Avenue, Central Avenue, and Manhattan Avenue, lies Pershing Field. This isn’t just any park. Pershing Field breathes history, echoing with the footsteps of athletes, soldiers, and everyday citizens. Originally envisioned as a reservoir, an extension of Reservoir #3, Pershing Field transformed into a vibrant hub of activity. Opened in 1919, the park quickly became known for its impressive track and field facilities, drawing athletes from far and wide. Pershing Field hosted events of the Amateur Athletic Union, witnessing the prowess of sporting legends like Stanisława Walasiewicz and Babe Didrikson Zaharias. The park’s dedication in 1922 cemented its connection to General John J. Pershing, honoring its prior role as a World War I training ground. Interestingly, despite the invitation, General Pershing couldn’t attend the grand opening ceremony on July 4th, sending a letter of apology instead. Pershing Field is more than just athletic grounds. It serves as a poignant memorial to those who served their country. The iconic reddish sandstone arch, a salvaged piece of the Fourth Regiment Armory, stands tall at the Summit Avenue entrance, a designated historic site. Nearby, plaques honor local figures like Mayor Frank Hague and Governor A. Harry Moore. The “America Triumphant” statue, a masterpiece by James Novelli, pays tribute to the 147 Hudson County residents who lost their lives in World War I. Later memorials honor veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, ensuring Pershing Field remains a space of remembrance. Scattered throughout the park are small stone markers, each bearing the name of a veteran from the World Wars, a quiet testament to their sacrifice. But Pershing Field is also a place of life.
