Remember 820. That year marks the first documentary evidence of Persebeck. It is written as “in uilla dicitur Perricbeci in pago Boretra”. This translates to “in the village called Perricbeci in the Boretra region”.
Persebeck lies in Dortmund’s southwest. It sits right on the city border with Witten. Kruckel, Menglinghausen, Eichlinghofen and Salingen border it too. Persebeck is part of the Hombruch district.
Let’s delve into Persebeck’s past. Around 1000 AD, it appeared as Perrecbeki. This was in the register of Werden Abbey. Around 1220 AD, the town showed up as Pirrebecke. It was in the bailiwick register of Essen Abbey. Between 1397 and 1432, Perenbecke appeared in the Volmarstein fief register.
Over time, Persebeck went by many names. These included Perenbeke and Pirebecke. Also, Peyrsbecke, Pyrbeke, Peirssbeke and Persbeick. Piersbeek was another name. The current name Persebeck became common from 1627.
In the Late Middle Ages and early modern period, Persebeck belonged to the County of Mark. It was within its own farming community, Persbeick. This was in the Hörde district.
The Persebeck name may refer to a stream. This stream may have defined or bordered something.
In the 19th century, Persebeck was a rural community. It was in the Hörde district and Barop office. In 1885, the community covered 1.40 square kilometers. Of this, 107 hectares were arable land. Fifteen hectares were meadows. Two hectares were woodland. There were 18 residential buildings with 33 households. One hundred ninety-three people lived there.
In 1921, Persebeck merged with Barop.
The Grotenbach stream flows through Persebeck. It is part of the Emschergenossenschaft association. The Grotenbach comes from Witten. It flows through Persebeck. It flows into the Rüpingsbach in Hombruch. Sewage pipes cleaned up the Grotenbach. They removed feces and industrial wastewater. The old concrete bed is gone. A complete restoration is planned.

The volunteer fire department’s fire station 17 is in Persebeck. It stands at the junction of Kruckeler Straße and Menglinghauser Straße. These roads are the main routes. Bus line 448 connects Persebeck to public transport. The Kruckel stop on S-Bahn line 5 offers connections. These go to Dortmund’s main station and Witten. They also connect to Hagen.
Persebeck has a kindergarten. It also has an AWO center on Grotenkamp street. Both are in the same building. A youth center is there too. Before construction, workers filled old tunnels. These belonged to the Vereinigte Wiendahlsbank mine. Next to the fire station and Menglinghauser Straße is a small park. It has playground equipment and a ball court.
