The soaring bell towers of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish pierce the Cebu sky. This isn’t just any church. It’s a beacon of faith a testament to resilience.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish also known as the Redemptorist Church stands proudly on R Aboitiz Street. Its Romanesque architecture is a stunning sight. The church was completed in 1950. It became a parish in the 1970s. Two impressive bell towers flank its facade.

The story of this church is deeply intertwined with the Redemptorist Missionaries. These missionaries arrived in Cebu in 1906. Their arrival followed the dwindling number of Spanish friars after the Philippine Revolution. They initially established missions in other parts of Cebu. Later they moved to Cebu City in 1914. Their focus was on the poor and the spiritually neglected. They learned local dialects earning the people’s trust.

World War II tested the faith of Cebu. The monastery chapel a precursor to the current church served as a refuge. People sought solace and spiritual guidance amidst the destruction. This experience fueled the desire for a larger church.

After the war fundraising began. Donations poured in enabling the import of high quality Belgian tiles and Swiss tower clocks. The beautiful church that stands today is a result of that effort. It was inaugurated on the feast day of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in June 1950.

The inside of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish is equally impressive. Fourteen Corinthian pillars line the nave. These are connected by arches perfect for processions. The main altar is the focal point. Behind it sits a stunning icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Two guardian angels flank the golden tabernacle. The icon’s beauty draws the eye of every visitor.

The Wednesday novenas are particularly special. People gather to recite prayers and offer petitions. Letters of thanksgiving for answered prayers are also read. Petitions cover a range of needs from physical and spiritual health to career success.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. It’s a place where history faith and the warmth of the Cebuano people intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty its history and the spiritual energy it exudes.
