Did the imposing walls of Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna in Bucharest ever imagine they’d house pickled goods? This fort, part of Bucharest’s impressive ring of 18 forts and 18 batteries, boasts a history far more varied than its military origins suggest. King Carol I, driven by the 19th-century military doctrine of defending capitals at all costs, commissioned this network. Construction on the Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna, like the others, began in 1884 under the guidance of Belgian military architect Henri Alexis Brialmont. Imagine the scale of the project: forts spaced 4 kilometers apart, linked by a road and a railway, and armed with 240 artillery pieces. The total cost was a staggering 111.5 million gold lei, three times the annual army budget. Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna, like its siblings, was designed to be a formidable stronghold. But the rapid advancement of military technology at the turn of the 20th century rendered these forts obsolete soon after completion. By 1916, as the German army approached, Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna and the others stood abandoned, their Krupp cannons repurposed for mobile artillery. The forts’ intended role in defending Bucharest against invasion never materialized. In the years that followed, Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna served various purposes, far removed from its military design. During the Communist era, it became a pickled goods market, a testament to the fort’s adaptability. Today, many of Bucharest’s forts stand abandoned, some housing stray dogs, others used for storage. Perimetru Fortul Nr. 18 Chiajna stands as a reminder of a bygone era of military strategy, a silent witness to the ever-changing landscape of Bucharest.
