“Imagine a sculptural form,” Zaha Hadid once said describing her vision for the Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre. This ambitious project was designed to be more than just a building. It was meant to be a growing organism.

The Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre was conceived as part of a grand cultural district on Saadiyat Island. This island was to host other iconic structures. These included the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The project also included commercial spaces, residences and hotels.

Hadid’s design, which won a competition in 2006, featured five distinct theaters. A music hall, a concert hall, an opera house, a large theater, and a smaller flexible theater were planned. These venues would offer a combined seating capacity of 6300. An academy for the performing arts was also part of the design.

One of the most complex challenges was the design of the concert hall. It was to be situated above the other four venues. This unique positioning allowed for daylight and sea views through a large window behind the stage. Acoustical studies were conducted to address the impact of asymmetry and glass on the hall’s acoustics.

The lobbies for each venue were designed to face the sea. This design choice aimed to connect visitors with their surroundings. The building’s overall form was intended to be organic. It was supposed to look like it was growing out of the island. It would project into the seascape.

Zaha Hadid described the structure as emerging from pedestrian paths. She envisioned it developing into a network of branches. These branches would house the performance spaces. They would spring from the structure like fruits on a vine. They would face westward toward the water.

Thomas Krens, Director of the Guggenheim Foundation, praised the Abu Dhabi government’s vision. He believed it would set a standard for global culture. Hadid herself noted the project continued her relationship with the Guggenheim Foundation and the Emirate.

Though the Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre is currently unrealized, its design remains a testament to Hadid’s vision. It is a symbol of Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a global cultural hub. The center represents a fusion of art, architecture, and natural beauty.
