Perhaps, while waiting for a train, you’ve wondered about the history humming beneath Perambur Loco Works Railway Station. This station isn’t just a stop; it’s a portal into Chennai’s industrial past. Perambur Loco Works Railway Station serves the Integral Coach Factory or ICF. ICF is one of the world’s largest railroad carriage and locomotive manufacturers. The station also supports the nearby areas of Periyar Nagar and Jawahar Nagar.

Let’s journey back to 1856. The Southern Railway’s workshop was established here. It served the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company. This marked one of the first major industrial units in early 20th-century Madras. Initially, it handled locomotives, carriages, and wagons. In 1932, the workshop was divided. The locomotive overhaul activity shifted to a new loco workshop. This new workshop was built adjacent to the original. Perambur Carriage Works and Perambur Loco Works stations serve these workshops respectively.

In 1951, the Southern Railway was formed. It integrated the South Indian Railway Company, the Southern Mahratta Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. All their workshops and assets were included. The lines at Perambur Loco Works Railway Station were electrified in 1979. This happened during the Chennai Central to Tiruvallur section electrification.

Perambur Loco Works Railway Station played a crucial role for the ICF. From 1956 to 1963, it handled furnishing works for new shells produced by ICF. This continued until ICF established its own furnishing division. Later, in 1965, the station started carriage and wagon overhauls. Air-conditioned coaches have been overhauled here since 1954.

Perambur Loco Works Railway Station is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Chennai’s railway heritage. It connects people and industries, past and present. As you board your train, remember the history beneath your feet. Think about the workers and the workshops that shaped this station. Consider the ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the station. In August 2023, plans were announced to upgrade the Perambur station to international standards. This is part of the ‘Amrit Bharat’ Railway Stations scheme. The scheme aims to provide basic facilities to passengers at major railway stations. These improvements ensure Perambur Loco Works Railway Station remains a vital hub for Chennai. The station will also have connectivity with the underground Perambur metro station in the future.

So, the next time you find yourself at Perambur Loco Works Railway Station, take a moment. Appreciate the station’s rich history and its contribution to India’s railway network. It’s a story of industry, innovation, and connection.
