Here stands the Pepe Hillo Plaque a simple yet poignant memorial. It marks the spot where the legendary bullfighter lived. Pepe Hillo a name whispered with respect even today. He was a master of his craft. His style was unique daring even unorthodox.

Born Jose Delgado Guerra in Seville in 1754 Pepe Hillo learned from the best. Joaquin Rodriguez known as Costillares. Costillares was considered the father of modern bullfighting. At just 15 Pepe Hillo debuted as a novillero. By 20 he’d received his alternativa. This made him an official matador.

Pepe Hillo’s style was unlike any other. He was known for his grace his skill. He incorporated daring flourishes and moves. This delighted fans but angered purists. Pedro Romero a rival considered Pepe Hillo’s style too flashy. He believed a bullfighter should only use their hands and remain still from the waist down.

Perhaps to prove his knowledge of classic techniques Pepe Hillo published a treatise. It was titled La Tauromaquia o Arte de Torear. This book was important in the history of bullfighting. It was likely written by his friend Jose de la Tixera.

Sadly Pepe Hillo’s career ended tragically. On May 11 1801 he was gored in the Plaza de la Corte in Madrid. This is now the Plaza Monumental de Las Ventas. The bull was named Barbudo. His death caused a sensation. Even Goya depicted the event in his etchings. Queen Maria Luisa mentioned it in private correspondence.

Years later Pablo Picasso a young artist created a portrait of Pepe Hillo. It’s a small drawing. It shows the lasting impact of Pepe Hillo. It showcases Picasso’s early fascination with bullfighting. The plaque we see today serves as a reminder of this iconic figure. His legacy continues to inspire and fascinate. It’s a testament to his skill and his courage in the face of danger. It’s a tribute to the enduring spirit of Pepe Hillo.
