Amidst the urban hustle, discover People’s Island. This unassuming traffic island south of O’Connell Bridge holds a unique story. People’s Island isn’t just a place for cars to navigate. It’s a living artwork, constantly changing with the flow of Dublin life. Created in 1988 by Irish sculptor Rachel Joynt, People’s Island was reconfigured in its original location in the summer of 2017. Commissioned by Dublin City Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the artwork sprawls across approximately 12m x 12m. Look closely at the ground. You’ll see a mosaic of bronze, aluminum, and concrete slabs. These aren’t just any slabs. Embedded within them are bronze and aluminum impressions. Footprints, bird tracks, and paw prints capture the essence of those who have crossed this urban intersection. People’s Island is more than just a sculpture. It’s a snapshot of Dublin’s vibrant energy, a testament to the constant movement of people and creatures through the heart of the city. People’s Island serves as a reminder that even in the midst of bustling city life, art can flourish in unexpected places.
