The Pentecostal Church of God has a rich history. It started in 1919 as the Pentecostal Assemblies of USA. A group of ministers formed it. They did not want to join the Assemblies of God. John C Sinclair led as the first moderator. He was a former Assemblies of God presbyter.
The church changed its name in 1922. It became the Pentecostal Church of God. The headquarters moved several times. It was in Ottumwa Iowa in 1927. Then it moved to Kansas City Missouri in 1933. In 1951 the headquarters relocated to Joplin Missouri. Finally in 2012 it moved to Bedford Texas.
This relocation followed the 2011 Joplin Tornado. However the decision to move began earlier. In 2009 the General Convention voted to explore a move. The reason was lower income. Declining membership and Messenger College struggles prompted the change.
The Pentecostal Church of God combines Pentecostal and evangelical beliefs. Its Statement of Faith outlines key doctrines. The Bible is the inspired word of God. There is one God existing as a Trinity. Salvation is available through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Salvation can be lost through free will. Water baptism is practiced. As of 2017 the headquarters became the International Missions Center IMC. The Messenger College learning center is now on the fourth floor of the IMC. Classes began there in the 2018-19 school year.
