Founded in 1933, Peniel has been an integral part of this neighborhood for generations. Those humble beginnings started with a congregation of just four worshippers. They gathered in a loft above a woodyard, united by their faith and a yearning for something greater. The name “Peniel” comes from the Book of Genesis, Chapter 32, verse 30. It symbolizes seeing God face to face, and it’s what Peniel Baptist Church has strived to do since its inception. Peniel’s story is marked by periods of significant growth. They moved locations, the congregation expanded, and they eventually erected a new church building in 1948, a testament to the dedication of its members. The Junior Choir was acclaimed throughout the city under the teaching of Professor Archie Brown, setting the stage for a vibrant musical tradition that continues today. At this church, you’ll see the unwavering spirit of resilience ingrained in its very core. The church building itself is a physical representation of their commitment. The original building, a bakery, was razed to make way for the new structure, costing them $375.00 per month, a substantial sum compared to their previous $50.00. Peniel persevered through the challenges, driven by their belief in something bigger than themselves. The church was established by Rev. Estee A. Walker, the pastor for over 50 years. His son, Rev. Lawrence H. Walker Sr., took over and added a new wing to the church. He served for almost 30 years until 2014, leaving a legacy of innovation and growth. Today, the church continues to thrive under the leadership of Pastor Khalil B. Rogers, carrying the torch of faith and community forward. Peniel Baptist Church is more than just a structure; it’s a testament to the power of faith, a symbol of the enduring ties of community, and a beacon of hope in the heart of Philadelphia.
