Slipping through time, let’s journey back to a crisp October day in 1825. Excitement fills the air near the Broughton Ford in Pendleton. A new bridge, a marvel of engineering, is about to rise, connecting Broughton and Pendleton across the River Irwell. This is the story of Pendleton Bridge, a pioneering structure in the world of suspension bridges. Pendleton Bridge was one of the first of its kind in Europe, opening the same year as the famed Menai Suspension Bridge. Spanning 144 feet, it was the brainchild of John FitzGerald, linking his estates and coal mines in Pendleton with the bustling districts of Adelphi and Lower Broughton. The bridge stood as a testament to innovation, its iron chains and cast-iron suspension frames a symbol of progress. But Pendleton Bridge’s journey wasn’t without its dramatic moments. On April 12, 1831, disaster struck. A troop of soldiers marching in perfect step across the bridge caused a catastrophic resonance. The rhythmic vibrations proved too much for one of the coupling bolts. The bridge gave way, plunging a section of soldiers into the river below. Thankfully, due to the low water level, no lives were lost, though several soldiers suffered injuries. This incident led to the now-common military practice of breaking step while crossing bridges. Pendleton Bridge was swiftly repaired and strengthened, but the memory of the collapse lingered. Temporary supports were added whenever large crowds were expected, a visible reminder of the bridge’s vulnerability. Originally a toll bridge, Pendleton Bridge eventually became unprofitable due to the opening of free bridges nearby. Despite being offered to the Corporation, it was declined due to the high cost of upkeep. By 1907, the once-proud structure was dilapidated and closed to traffic. Finally, in 1924, Pendleton Bridge met its end. It was replaced by a footbridge, designed by the Borough Engineer, which reused the original abutments. Though the original Pendleton Bridge is gone, its story remains, a tale of innovation, disaster, and adaptation etched into the history of Manchester.
