Amidst the echoes of a world war, the Pembroke Division 1918 emerged. Here in Dublin, this constituency briefly held a pivotal role in Irish history. Pembroke Division 1918 was born from the Redistribution of Seats (Ireland) Act 1918. This act reshaped Dublin’s political landscape, increasing its representation in the House of Commons. The Pembroke Division encompassed the urban district of Pembroke. It also included parts of Rathdown No. 1 rural district (Dundrum and Milltown) and South Dublin rural district. In the 1918 general election, the Pembroke Division 1918 sent Desmond FitzGerald to Westminster. He represented Sinn Féin. This election was a landmark moment. Sinn Féin used it as a springboard to form Dáil Éireann. FitzGerald chose to abstain from Westminster and instead sat in the First Dáil. The Pembroke Division 1918’s existence was short-lived. The Government of Ireland Act 1920 combined it with other Dublin constituencies. This created a larger constituency for both the Southern Ireland House of Commons and Westminster. By 1922, with the establishment of the Irish Free State, the Pembroke Division 1918 ceased to be represented at Westminster. The 1922 general election saw no vote held in Dublin County. This marked the end of Pembroke Division 1918’s brief but significant chapter in Irish political history. The echoes of its role in a tumultuous period still resonate here in Dublin.
