Later it became a town in 1741 and finally the city of Penafiel in 1770. The pillory, a symbol of the town’s legal authority, moved with it. Its design suggests it was likely built in the 19th century, perhaps after Penafiel gained city status. Imagine the scenes this pillory has witnessed. Arrifana do Sousa itself has roots stretching back to the 9th century. A village founded then eventually evolved into the municipality of Penafiel. The very name Penafiel, while documented since the 11th century, became official only in 1770, thanks to King José I. The Pelourinho de Penafiel has been a silent observer. It stood as Penafiel transformed from a small village to a bustling city. Today, the Pelourinho stands as a reminder of Portugal’s rich past.
