Can you imagine justice being served under the shade of a tree? This is the story of the Pedra de Audiência, a unique monument in Portugal. In front of you stands the Pedra de Audiência, the only one of its kind, a granite table with three benches, a historical relic that takes us back to the time when justice was served in open air. Located in the village of Avintes, near Porto, the Pedra de Audiência was built in 1742. It was used for hearings and trials, a testament to the autonomy of the local court. A symbol of justice, the Pedra de Audiência, hosted weekly court sessions. The elected judge, holding a red rod, stood at the table, and two officers, the scribe and the bailiff, assisted him. The trials were held under the watchful eyes of local citizens, ensuring transparency. The Pedra de Audiência remained in use until 1832, when modern courtrooms were introduced. Despite its no longer being used for judicial purposes, the Pedra de Audiência remains a valuable landmark, a reminder of the past. The local authorities protected the Pedra de Audiência and lovingly cared for its giant cork oak, believed to have been planted around the time of its construction. A storm in 1961 caused the majestic cork oak to fall. The locals, saddened by the loss of their historical landmark, planted a new cork oak. Today, the Pedra de Audiência is a symbol of Avintes’ legal heritage, reminding us of the area’s rich history and judicial past.
