Gazing at Pedra Alta, can you sense the echoes of history? This imposing rock isn’t just a natural wonder. It’s a landmark steeped in the legacy of Port wine. Pedra Alta, meaning “high stone,” stands as a testament to a rich viticultural past. Quinta da Pedra Alta, the vineyard surrounding this landmark, is located in the Cima Corgo, a sub-region of the Douro Valley. This region is renowned for its dramatic terrain and the production of exceptional Ports. Pedra Alta is unique because it bears three original granite markers, known as “Marcos Pombalinos.” These markers were placed in the 18th century by the Marquis of Pombal to demarcate the finest vineyards for Port production. Quinta da Pedra Alta is the only vineyard with three of these markers still standing. This fact underscores its historical significance in the Port wine industry. The vineyard’s logo even incorporates these markers, a clear symbol of their heritage. The terrain surrounding Pedra Alta is challenging. The vineyards are terraced, adapting to the slopes. Some terraces hold just a single row of vines, accessible only by foot. This necessitates the expertise of local workers who intimately understand each vine parcel. The vines at Quinta da Pedra Alta grow at altitudes between 230 and 550 meters above sea level. The variation in altitude, combined with diverse sun exposures, creates a complex microclimate. This microclimate influences the flavors and aromas of the grapes. The schist soil of the Douro Valley also plays a crucial role. This poor soil forces the vines to root deeply, resulting in concentrated grapes. The vineyard cultivates a blend of indigenous and traditional Douro grapes. These grapes are carefully blended to create a range of still wines and Ports. At Pedra Alta, they continue the tradition of foot treading grapes in granite lagares. This ancient method gently extracts color and flavor. Pedra Alta isn’t just a rock. It’s a symbol of the Douro Valley’s viticultural history and a testament to the enduring pursuit of quality Port wine.
