Guardhouses prisoner-of-war barracks stables a gymnasium and a firehouse are still standing. Many are closed to the public though. Safety is a priority. The island’s history extends beyond warfare. A fishing community lived here starting in 1887. Their homes eventually evolved into the private cottages you see today.
