Pechanga Arena stands on Sports Arena Boulevard. It has gone through several name changes. It was once known as the San Diego International Sports Arena. Later, it became the iPayOne Center and Valley View Casino Center. Now, it proudly carries the name Pechanga Arena.
This versatile arena can host various events. For arena football, it seats 12000 people. Ice hockey and box lacrosse events accommodate 12920 fans. Basketball and tennis matches draw crowds of 14500. Smaller amphitheater concerts seat 5450. Arena concerts can host between 8900 and 14800. Ice shows and circuses fill 13000 seats. Boxing and mixed martial arts events bring in 16100 spectators.
Did you know that Pechanga Arena was once ranked as the number one facility in the nation? Amusement Business/Billboard Magazine gave it this honor in 2000. It was for venues seating 10001 to 15000 seats. The arena continued to receive accolades. The same magazine ranked it number two in 2002. It was fifth in 2003. Billboard Magazine ranked it fifth again in 2007. In 2013, U-T San Diego named it third on its list. This list covered the 50 most notable locations in San Diego sports history.
Many sports teams have called Pechanga Arena home. The San Diego Rockets of the NBA played here from 1967 to 1971. The San Diego Clippers also played here from 1978 to 1984. Other teams include the San Diego Sails and the San Diego Mariners. The San Diego Sockers also called this arena home. They won ten titles here.
Pechanga Arena has hosted significant events. The 1971 NBA All-Star Game took place here. The arena also hosted the 1973 Muhammad Ali versus Ken Norton boxing fight. Nirvana performed here. WWE Vengeance and WWE Extreme Rules events also occurred here. Many famous musicians have graced its stage. Britney Spears and Madonna have performed here.
The arena’s construction cost $6.4 million. Bob Breitbard, a local football hero, built it. The arena opened its doors on November 17, 1966. Over 11000 hockey fans watched the San Diego Gulls win their opener.
In June 2023, there was an announcement about the arena’s future. The Kroenke Group plans to redevelop the site. The project is called Midway Rising. The plan includes demolishing Pechanga Arena. A new 16000-seat arena will be built. The project also includes housing units, a park, and an entertainment district.
