From a Confucian temple to a revolutionary hub, the Peasant Movement Institute in Guangzhou holds a captivating story. The Peasant Movement Institute wasn’t always a place of revolution. It started as a Confucian temple built in the 14th century. This building witnessed a dramatic shift in purpose. The Peasant Movement Institute played a crucial role in China’s turbulent history. It became a training ground for young revolutionaries. This was during a time of cooperation between the Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Communist Party (CCP). The institute officially opened its doors on July 3, 1924. Its location was the former Huizhou Association headquarters on South Yuexiu Road. Peng Pai, a key figure in the CCP, served as the first director. The Peasant Movement Institute hosted six terms between 1924 and 1926. Notable figures like Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Xiao Chu’nü lectured here. They instilled revolutionary ideals in hundreds of students from across China. These students would later become key players in the peasant uprisings. The collaboration between the KMT and CCP eventually fractured. This led to the closure of the institute in 1926. Many of its former students tragically lost their lives during the failed 1927 uprising. Their sacrifice is commemorated at the Martyrs Memorial Park. The Peasant Movement Institute was revived in the 1950s. It now serves as a museum. The museum showcases the institute’s revolutionary past.
