Have you ever stumbled upon a place that holds more history than it first appears? Peak Overlook, once known as Tombstone Rock, is one such place. It offers breathtaking views of Lake Las Vegas, Lake Mead, and the glittering Las Vegas Strip. But Peak Overlook holds a secret history, etched in the remnants of an old mining campsite and what some call a “gravesite.” Our journey to Peak Overlook begins at an old ranger station on Lakeshore Road. We then cross the road and enter a wash leading to “Bullet Wash.” This wash, scattered with spent bullets and shells, whispers of a time when this area echoed with gunshots, perhaps from prospectors or lawmen. The trail continues past the imposing Tombstone Rock, leading us upward to a preliminary overlook. We then follow an old dirt road that takes us on a detour to a dramatic dry fall, a testament to the power of water carving through the desert rock. After marveling at the dry fall, we ascend a scree slope to the right, eventually reaching the mining campsite. Here, hidden among the rocks, you might discover remnants of past inhabitants, like a weathered sheep skull, a silent witness to the area’s history. The campsite, perched on a small hill, leads to the true highlight of the journey: Peak Overlook itself. From this vantage point, the views are simply stunning. Spread before you is a panorama of the shimmering Lake Mead, the vibrant city of Las Vegas, and the sprawling expanse of the surrounding desert. Peak Overlook isn’t just a place to take in the scenery. It’s a place where the past and present meet, where the whispers of old mining dreams mingle with the vibrant energy of the modern city.
