Originally, Fort Peachtree stood guard near the confluence of Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochee River, protecting settlers from the Cherokee who lived northwest of the river. The Battle of Peachtree Creek, a major clash during the Atlanta Campaign, left its mark on the landscape. This pivotal battle, fought in July 1864, saw Confederate forces under General Hood launch a desperate attack against Sherman’s Union troops poised to capture Atlanta. Today, echoes of that conflict persist in street names like Peachtree Battle Avenue and Paces Ferry Road. These routes still follow the general path of the creek and a nearby ferry crossing that served as a vital transportation link during the war. Peachtree Creek isn’t just a single entity.
