They chose a prominent spot in front of the General Assembly building. Thousands pass by daily witnessing this powerful message. The initial plan was to place it in a corner offering a striking silhouette against the East River. This would have beautifully connected with the UN buildings’ architecture. Unfortunately a later change by the Secretary-General moved it slightly. This slightly altered the intended visual impact.
The creation of the Peace Monument was a monumental task. It was cast in bronze in Zagreb Croatia. Its 33-foot-high pedestal is made of marble from the island of Brač. The journey from Zagreb to New York was an adventure in itself. The unveiling ceremony on December 2 1954 was a significant event. UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and other dignitaries attended. Sadly Augustinčić missed the ceremony due to other commitments.
