Hidden beneath the vibrant tapestry of Guangzhou lies Pazhou, a place steeped in history. Pazhou station serves as a modern gateway to this once-isolated island. Pazhou, formerly known as Whampoa Island, was a crucial anchorage for foreign trade during the Qing Dynasty. Imagine towering East Indiamen swaying gently in the eastern bay, their masts reaching for the sky. This was the primary location for ships engaged in Guangzhou’s foreign trade. Traders from across the globe, including Indians, Arabians, and Europeans, were required to anchor their vessels at Pazhou. Smaller boats then ferried goods to and from the Thirteen Factories, the designated trading area in Guangzhou’s western suburbs. Pazhou was more than just an anchorage. It was a bustling hub where traders rented bankshalls, sheds made of bamboo and mats, for storing supplies and repairing ships. These bankshalls sometimes even served as temporary living quarters. The island buzzed with activity as sampan ladies swarmed around the ships, offering laundry services and other necessities to the sailors. The journey to Pazhou from the Humen Strait was often an ordeal. Due to shallow waters and strong currents, ships often needed to be towed, adding to the vibrant maritime scene. Pazhou also played a crucial role during the First Opium War. The Battle of Whampoa, fought here in 1841, marked a turning point in the history of the region. Today, Pazhou is a thriving commercial and recreational center, home to the Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center, where the Canton Fair takes place annually. Pazhou station, an interchange between Lines 8 and 11 of the Guangzhou Metro, reflects this modern transformation. The station boasts a unique design, featuring cultural artworks such as Cantonese carvings and porcelain. It also serves as a vital transport hub, facilitating access to the Canton Fair Complex. Pazhou, from a historical anchorage to a modern metropolis, continues to be a significant part of Guangzhou’s vibrant story.
