How about a story of innovation and dedication? Right here stands the Pavillon Jean-Coutu. It is part of the Université de Montréal. This building and the Pavillon Marcelle-Coutu complete the university’s scientific hub. They stand alongside the Aisenstadt and Desmarais Pavilions.

The Pavillon Jean-Coutu is named after pharmacist Jean Coutu. He donated 12.5 million dollars for its construction. This was the largest private contribution to a French-language educational institution at the time. The Quebec government and the university also invested in the project.

Completed in 2005, the Pavillon Jean-Coutu is home to the Faculty of Pharmacy. Previously, the faculty was in the main pavilion. Now it occupies twice the space. The building includes classrooms, an auditorium, and teaching labs. Upper floors house research labs for twenty researchers. These labs meet high biosafety standards. The faculty’s administrative offices are also located here.

A striking feature is the 750 square meter atrium. It spans several levels and serves as a major architectural element. The Pavillon Jean-Coutu increases the university’s capacity. It allowed the Faculty of Pharmacy to admit more students. About thirty more students could join the bachelor’s program in pharmacy. This is now a professional doctorate program. The pavilion has an amphitheater floor and professional practice labs. There is an administrative floor for clinical professors. Two floors are dedicated to research labs.

The Pavillon Jean-Coutu also houses three artworks. These are Osmose, Histoire de la santé, and Micropaysages. These pieces add a cultural dimension to the scientific environment. The building’s design integrates with the surrounding architecture. Its yellow brick and banded windows reflect the style of nearby buildings.

Together, the Pavillon Jean-Coutu and Pavillon Marcelle-Coutu boost the university’s research capabilities. They solidify its position as a leader in biomedical sciences. The Pavillon Jean-Coutu stands as a testament to the power of collaboration. It highlights the importance of investing in education and research. The Pavillon Jean-Coutu offers users a view of the city’s northern expanse.
