Built during the University of Montreal’s second development phase 1960-1968 Pavillon 3200 Jean-Brillant stands proudly. It sits in the campus’s west sector. The land was purchased from the Franciscan Friars in the 1920s. Its name? Simple. It’s the street address 3200 Rue Jean-Brillant.

Designed by Beauvais and Lusignan the pavilion boasts brown brick. Its side facades feature projecting raw concrete elements. This design element adds dynamism. The same materials were used for Pavillons Maximilien-Caron and Lionel-Groulx. These were designed by the same architects during the same period.

Around Place Laurentienne these three pavilions create a unique group. Their shared characteristics set them apart from other buildings on campus. The social sciences hub is easily identifiable on Mount Royal’s north side.

Landscape architect Jean-Claude La Haye designed Place Laurentienne in 1968. He retained the site’s original natural character. Uneven ground and rocky outcrops remain. Vegetation is abundant.

Pavillon 3200 Jean-Brillant houses large amphitheaters. These seat over 100 students some holding up to 300. They’re perfect for popular introductory and interprogram courses. They are especially useful for large end-of-session exam groups.

The building features a striking entrance. It’s over 50 meters long. It’s recessed under the building. This is a massive concrete overhang. This was likely to keep Place Laurentienne open. The effect however is rather unpleasant and oppressive. Pavillon 3200 Jean-Brillant. A building with a story. A building with a unique history. A building worth exploring.
