In the heart of Dortmund’s Nordstadt, the Pauluskirche stands as a testament to resilience. The Pauluskirche isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a survivor. Erected between 1892 and 1894, this church was designed by the Berlin architect Karl Doflein. The Pauluskirche bravely weathered the storms of World War II, enduring significant damage. Yet, it refused to surrender. The resilient spirit of the Nordstadt community is mirrored in the church’s steadfast presence. After the war, the Pauluskirche was painstakingly restored, standing once again as a beacon of hope. Another restoration took place in 1994, further solidifying its place in the community. Today, the Pauluskirche serves the Evangelical Lydia community. This community was formed in 2007 through the merging of three congregations: Frieden, Markus, and Paulus. The name Lydia honors the first European Christian, a woman from Greece mentioned in the Bible. The church’s history is etched not only in its stones but also in its evolving surroundings. The original community center, built in 1964 and complete with a kindergarten, was closed in 2017 and subsequently demolished. In its place now stand a rehabilitation facility, a modern kindergarten, and a new community center. These additions highlight the church’s continuing role as a vital hub within the Nordstadt district. Inside, the Pauluskirche resonates with the rich sounds of a three-part steel chime, tuned to C sharp, E, and G. The church also boasts a magnificent two-manual organ. This organ, built in 1994 by the Austrian firm Rieger, enhances the church’s role as a venue for concerts and cultural events. The Pauluskirche is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural center, a community anchor, and a living testament to the enduring spirit of Dortmund.
