Paulsboro High School

In 1907, a seed was planted. Not a literal seed, but the seed of an idea. This seed would blossom into Paulsboro High School. Paulsboro High School first began as a program at Buck Street School. The first class graduated in 1909, two young women who chose the school’s colors: red and white. Paulsboro High School officially opened its doors in May 1917. The building cost $60,000, a hefty sum in those days. Interestingly, this was just a month after the United States entered World War I. Paulsboro High School has always served students from surrounding towns. This regional approach speaks to the school’s commitment to community. The first graduating class from the actual Paulsboro High School building was in 1917. There were only seven students. Prior to the building’s completion, commencement ceremonies were held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The same church now hosts the school’s annual Baccalaureate Ceremony, a lovely echo of the past. The school expanded in 1931 with a new auditorium, cafeteria, and gymnasium. This happened during the Great Depression. It shows the community’s dedication to education, even in tough times. Paulsboro High School’s first yearbook, the Pegasus, was published in 1938. The school’s symbol, also Pegasus, is a nod to both the arts and athletic achievement. The school’s athletic fields, known as the Bennett Fields Athletic Complex, were dedicated in 1937. They were renovated in 1995 and rededicated in 1996. During World War II, many students left Paulsboro High School to serve their country. Some never returned. In a touching tribute, honorary diplomas were awarded to these veterans during the Class of 2000 commencement ceremony. The Brotherhood Award, established in 1957, is a testament to the school’s values of respect and fellowship. Paulsboro High School has a long-standing tradition of supporting a wide variety of student activities. Everything from ballroom dancing to cooking clubs has graced its halls. The school’s “New Wing” was added in 1966, providing more space for the arts and vocational programs. Even today, Paulsboro High School maintains its commitment to woodshop and culinary arts. The Paulsboro High School Golden Anniversary Club, founded in 1976, keeps alumni connected and provides scholarships. During the mid-1990s, the school underwent a major technology upgrade, ensuring every room had computers and internet access. Paulsboro High School’s athletic achievements are legendary. The wrestling team’s “dynasty” with over 1,000 wins is nationally recognized. The football team’s 63 consecutive wins from 1992 to 1998, known as “The Streak,” remains a state record. A new library was added in 2001, and the school continues to modernize its facilities. Paulsboro High School has also played a role in popular culture. The 2004 Kevin Smith film “Jersey Girl” filmed scenes at the school, and a street was even named “Kevin Smith Way”. In 2014, the Hall of Heroes was dedicated. It honors 55 Paulsboro High School graduates who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a “School of Choice”, Paulsboro High School continues to shape the lives of its students and the community.
