Have you ever wondered what it was like to learn in a school shaped like a “W”? Paul VI High School was built to look like a giant “W” with the central cafeteria and gym in the middle and the classrooms stretching out to the sides. Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano, Bishop of Camden, had a dream to build a school for all, regardless of their background or creed. The school, designed by Armond Nasuti of Haddon Heights, was built for 2,000 students. It opened in 1966 with 613 freshmen and sophomores. It was staffed by 10 priests, 18 sisters, and 10 lay teachers. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but this school has seen its share of history and success. The Paul VI Eagles, as the school’s athletic teams are known, have not gone unnoticed. Their boys’ cross country team held the record for the longest unbeaten streak in the state for 28 years when, in 2007, Camden Catholic beat them. The basketball team also has bragging rights to a couple of championships. The 1980 team won the Parochial A state title, and although the state championship was a nail-biter, in 1983, the Paul VI team won against Immaculata by one point with just seconds left in the game.
