How about a bouquet for a giant? This is Jim Love’s Paul Bunyan Bouquet no. 2. It stands here as a testament to Houston’s vibrant art scene. The Paul Bunyan Bouquet no. 2 sculpture is a unique piece. It reflects Love’s innovative approach to art.

Jim Love was one of Houston’s most beloved sculptors. Love found beauty in discarded objects. He transformed junkyard finds into elegant art. The artist called these creations “put-togethers.”

This Paul Bunyan Bouquet no. 2 dates back to 1968. Love crafted it from red brass and cast iron. The Brown Foundation gifted it to this location. Now everyone can admire it.

Love’s journey began in Amarillo. He honed his skills in Houston. He worked as a set fabricator for the Alley Theatre. Love was also the chief technician for the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Jermayne MacAgy personally chose him.

Love gained national attention in 1961. The Museum of Modern Art included his work in “The Art of Assemblage.” It was a turning point for collaged art. Love found inspiration in a Waco junkyard. There he discovered discarded machinery and cast-iron pieces. These became the basis for his hybrid figures and metal flower bouquets.

Paul Bunyan Bouquet no. 2 represents a bouquet on a giant’s scale. It is an early example of his unique style. Writer Donald Barthelme noted Love’s fondness for “almost-useful objects”. This fondness is clear in Love’s major works.

Another sculpture by Jim Love is “Jack.” In this sculpture he welded steel. He challenged the seriousness of Minimalist sculpture. Barthelme even compared him to a Texan Claes Oldenburg.

Jim Love’s influence on Texas artists is undeniable. His legacy lives on through his works in many museums. These include the Museum of Modern Art and the Menil Collection. Also, his works are exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Jim Love died in Houston in 2005.

Consider the bouquet’s composition. Notice the metal brushes and rusted discs. Imagine the scale Love envisioned for this piece. Paul Bunyan Bouquet no. 2 embodies Love’s creative vision. It transforms the mundane into something extraordinary. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry. Think about the artist’s unique perspective. This sculpture stands as a testament to Houston’s artistic spirit.
