Patterton Tower is also known as Capelrig Tower. It sits within the grounds of Towerwood House. Imagine this tower in its prime. Landscaped terracing and steps once led to its entrance.
Let’s journey back to the 18th century. It’s believed that Patterton Tower was constructed then. The architect remains unknown. Picture this tower as a vantage point. Perhaps it offered stunning views of the surrounding lands.
Fast forward to February 2008. An external inspection reveals the tower’s ruinous state. It is a shell without a roof.
Another inspection occurred in September 2014. Trees had encroached upon the site. Otherwise, Patterton Tower remained unchanged. Time and nature have taken their toll. The tower is now classified as “at risk”. Despite its condition, it holds a low category of risk.
Patterton Tower is unlisted. It stands as a testament to history. The tower is a private property.
The area around Patterton Tower has a rich history. Thornliebank’s story is linked to the textile industry. The Crum family and the Thornliebank Printworks played significant roles. Robert Osburn established a printfield in 1778. John Crum later bought Osburn’s holdings. The Crums expanded the business.
Under Walter Crum, the focus shifted. The business concentrated on bleaching and dyeing. The works produced fine textiles that were sold worldwide. Alexander Crum was known as an enlightened employer. He built houses for his workers. He also improved sanitation in the village.
The Crum Library was built to commemorate Alexander. It was built from funds raised by the village. Thornliebank continued to grow. Transport links improved with a railway station in 1881.
Today, Patterton Tower stands as a ruinous yet evocative reminder of the past. Its stones hold stories of centuries gone by. Though unlisted and at risk, it remains a landmark.
