Have you ever heard the story of how Pattaya, one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, got its name? It’s a story that goes back to 1767. At that time, Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand, was under attack by Burmese invaders. King Taksin, a brave leader, led his army south in search of a new home. As they journeyed, King Taksin’s soldiers met a local leader named Nai Klom near where Pattaya stands today. Impressed by King Taksin’s strong army and noble character, Nai Klom surrendered without fighting. This place where they met became known as “Thap Phraya”, meaning ″the army of the Phraya.″ Later, the name changed to Phatthaya, which refers to the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Finally, it was shortened to just Pattaya. Over time, the quiet fishing village grew as more visitors came to experience its peaceful shores. Pattaya’s transformation truly began when American servicemen arrived during the Vietnam War. Many of them were searching for rest and relaxation. Word of mouth spread back to their bases, and soon, Pattaya became a popular location for R&R, forever changing its fate.
