“Did the walls of the Patriot An Junggeun Memorial Hall always whisper such powerful stories?” Here, at the base of Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, stands a testament to a man and a nation’s struggle for freedom. The Patriot An Junggeun Memorial Hall isn’t just a building. It’s a living echo of An Junggeun’s unwavering spirit in the face of Japanese oppression. The memorial replaces an older structure, erected in 1970. This newer hall, designed by D.LIM Architects, opened in 2010, commemorating the centennial anniversary of An’s execution. Twelve luminous columns rise from the ground, embracing the hall. These columns represent the twelve members of the Dongui Danjihoe, the Society of Patriots. An Junggeun founded this secret society. Its members, including An, severed parts of their left ring fingers as a symbol of their commitment to Korea’s liberation. Inside the Patriot An Junggeun Memorial Hall, the story unfolds across three levels. The first level introduces An’s family. Many of his family members were also deeply involved in the independence movement, a testament to the widespread yearning for freedom. The second level delves deeper into An’s life and activism. Interactive videos bring the past to life, immersing visitors in the tumultuous era. The third level focuses on the pivotal moment in 1909. It was then that An assassinated Ito Hirobumi, the first Resident-General of Korea, at the Harbin train station. The memorial hall displays actual video footage of An’s arrest, a chilling reminder of his sacrifice. The exhibit also chronicles An’s execution at Lushun Prison at the young age of 32. Before his death, he expressed his wish to have his remains returned to Korea only after its independence. Sadly, his remains have yet to be found. A temporary tomb in Hyochang Park serves as a place of remembrance until then. The Patriot An Junggeun Memorial Hall culminates in a unique space. The top level of the only clear glass column offers panoramic views of Seoul and the Han River. It’s a powerful vantage point. It prompts reflection on the sacrifices made for Korea’s freedom and the legacy of An Junggeun.
