The PATH Lift Bridge’s story begins in 1900, crafted by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Initially, it served as a vital link in their main line, leading to Exchange Place in Jersey City. But destiny had other plans for the PATH Lift Bridge. In 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad opened the North River Tunnels to Manhattan’s Penn Station. This shifted their main line traffic, creating an opportunity for the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad. This rapid transit line, later known as PATH, saw the potential of the bridge. In 1911, they began service between Manhattan Transfer station in Harrison and lower Manhattan, utilizing the PATH Lift Bridge. This arrangement continued until 1961 when Exchange Place was closed by the Pennsylvania Railroad.
