Thirteen men. A stormy night. A herring-laden fishing trawler named Pasages. This is their story. Right here on Jurby Beach you stand before the remnants of the Pasages shipwreck. A grim reminder of a desperate struggle against the unforgiving sea.

In December 1931 the Pasages was returning from successful herring fishing in Northern Ireland. Gale-force winds and pitch-black darkness greeted her as she approached the Isle of Man. Suddenly the ship ran aground on the soft sand. Confusion and chaos reigned as the captain realized his mistake.

Rescue flares shot into the night sky. A rescue party had to descend a nearby headland to reach the stranded crew. All thirteen men survived that night a testament to their courage and the swift actions of the rescuers. The herring though a valuable cargo had to be dumped overboard. The sea claimed its price.

Today only the outline of the Pasages remains visible at low tide. The engine protrudes prominently a stubborn sentinel from a bygone era. Most of the hull plating is gone eroded by time and tides. Yet the wreck endures a poignant monument. A stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who make their living from the sea.

Imagine the scene. The howling wind the crashing waves the desperate cries for help. Then the sight of the rescue flares cutting through the darkness offering a beacon of hope. The wreck of the Pasages is more than just a pile of rusting metal. It is a story of survival against the odds. A testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It’s a story whispered by the waves a story etched into the sands of Jurby Beach. A story that unfolds each time the tide retreats. A story that is both haunting and inspiring. This is the legacy of the Pasages a legend of the Isle of Man.
