In 1902, the Pasadena Apartments arose on Detroit’s East Jefferson Avenue. The Pasadena Apartments offered a new style of living for Detroit’s elite. Imagine Detroit at the turn of the 20th century. The city was booming. New industries were attracting wealthy families. These families needed housing. However, financing a private home was difficult. The Pasadena Apartments offered a luxurious alternative. This eleven-story yellow brick building, with its limestone facade, provided upscale living. It featured bay windows rising from basement to tenth floor and a classic style entrance. The Pasadena Apartments, designed by Mortimer L. Smith, was an early example of high-class multi-unit housing. It was one of the first to be built with reinforced concrete. Over the years, some of the original classical details, like the cornice and false balconies, have been removed. However, the Pasadena Apartments still stands as a testament to Detroit’s architectural and social history. Today, the Pasadena Apartments are operated by MFG Detroit. They continue to offer apartment living, much as they did over a century ago. They stand as a reminder of a time when Detroit was transforming into a major industrial center. The Pasadena Apartments witnessed the rise of a new class of wealthy Detroiters. They sought luxurious and convenient living in the heart of a rapidly growing city.
