Gazing upon these colossal stone spheres, one might feel like an ant surveying a giant’s marble collection. This is Pars pro Toto, a sculpture by Alicja Kwade, and it’s designed to evoke just that feeling. Pars pro Toto, meaning “a part for the whole” in Latin, consists of eight massive stone spheres. Each sphere hails from a quarry on a different continent, making this sculpture a truly global representation. The sheer size of these spheres, the largest weighing a staggering 24 tons, dwarfs us. Their polished surfaces gleam in the sunlight, reflecting the sky and our own awestruck faces. Kwade intended this installation to be a miniature cosmos right here in Heidelberg. The spheres are arranged to resemble planets in orbit or perhaps a scaled-up version of atomic particles. The ambiguity is intentional, prompting us to question our place within the vast universe. This Pars pro Toto exhibition was open from May 7th to October 29th, 2023. It featured other captivating works by Kwade, such as “Big Be-Hide” and “Wächter (Anschauungsvorstellung).” These pieces play with mirrors, granite boulders, and geometric forms, further distorting our sense of scale and perspective. The artist encourages us to confront the double infinity of scale. The universe is both infinitesimally small and unfathomably vast. Where do these stone giants fit in, and where do we? This contemplation is the essence of Pars pro Toto. The sculpture invites us to ponder the interconnectedness of all things, from the smallest particle to the largest celestial body. We are all, in a sense, parts of a much grander whole.
