Imagine worn shoes and tireless dedication. This is the story of Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva. We are standing before a place born from community spirit.

Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva stands as a testament to faith. It also represents neighborhood unity. Its history is intertwined with the district of Hortaleza.

Let’s step back in time. Fifty years ago, this area was new. It was called Nueva Esperanza. This name came from a housing cooperative. The parish adopted a similar name. It became Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva.

Initially, the church services were held in a temporary building. This building was a simple construction site shed. Parishioners remember overflowing services. Many had to stand outside. They echoed prayers without truly hearing.

Manolo recalls those early days. He remembers the sense of community. He notes that the area has three key pillars. These pillars are heating, gardens, and the church. The heating came from a central tower. It supplied 3300 homes via underground pipes.

The driving force behind Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva was Gabriel Gaspar Tébar. Locals remember him as tireless. He carried the church project on his shoulders. Encarni recalls that Gabriel’s shoes had holes. The money was tight. He worked with a dedicated group. They were known as his “Praetorian Guard”. Together, they tirelessly worked for their projects.

After ten years, the community built the current church. Later they added a large barracón. This provided space for meetings and events. Evenings included theatre and movie showings. Sundays featured post-Mass gatherings. Gabriel himself helped build it. He rolled up his sleeves and laid bricks.

The grounds include a field near the cemetery. Here, you could find football tournaments. During Lent, the Stations of the Cross took place. Vigils and parish festivals happened here. Some couples even chose to get married here. Recently, they restored the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

Today, Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva is recovering after the pandemic. The church is known for its family atmosphere. It has a special devotion to Cristo de Medinaceli. A donated image of Christ is displayed. Parishioners sing a hymn to it each Friday.

In 2023, Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Carlos Osoro, presided over a solemn Mass. During the service they played the recently restored organ. The parishioners appreciated the Cardinal’s visit.

Parroquia Virgen de La Nueva continues to evolve. It welcomes new generations. It offers school support and other activities. This church stands as a beacon. It embodies faith, community, and enduring spirit.
