Hidden within the bustling cityscape of Madrid lies the Parroquia Santa María del Pinar. It’s a place of peace and reflection, steeped in captivating stories. Originally, this church, located on Calle del Jazmín, was known as San Antonio María Claret, erected in 1960. However, a transformation occurred on May 2, 1972. The Parroquia officially became Santa María del Pinar. This shift wasn’t just a name change; it represented a new chapter in the church’s history. Interestingly, despite the name change, there wasn’t a designated titular image for Santa María del Pinar initially.

Fast forward to May 5th, 2019. A vibrant celebration filled the Parroquia Santa María del Pinar. Cardinal Carlos Osoro, the Archbishop of Madrid, led a special mass. He consecrated and placed a beautiful icon of Santa María del Pinar. This icon, crafted by Sister Francis Robles, featured a distinctive detail: a pine tree in the background. The Virgin Mary, holding baby Jesus and a pinecone, stands prominently in the foreground. The pinecone and pine tree aren’t just artistic choices. They serve as a nod to the church’s new name, “Pinar” meaning pine grove in Spanish. The icon wasn’t merely an image; it became a symbol of the church’s identity.

This celebration also marked a shift in the church’s calendar. The first Sunday of May became the official day to honor Santa María del Pinar. The Parroquia Santa María del Pinar continued to thrive. In 2022, the church community joyfully celebrated the 50th anniversary of its renaming. Cardinal Osoro again graced the occasion with his presence. He presided over a solemn mass, commemorating half a century of Santa María del Pinar.

Today, the Parroquia Santa María del Pinar remains a vibrant part of the Madrid community. It serves as a testament to its evolving history and the enduring power of faith.
