What stands before you now tells a tale of faith resilience and ruin. This is the Parroquia San Sebastián in Antigua Guatemala. Imagine if you will its beginnings as a humble hermitage back in 1565.

San Sebastián was not always in this location. Initially it was on the Cerro de San Felipe. Around 1582 Juan de Cuéllar relocated it closer to town at the foot of Cerro del Manchén.

The move was to better serve the spiritual needs of the growing community. San Sebastián became a parish church. It was one of three key parishes governing the ancient city. The others were Candelaria and Los Remedios.

Disasters repeatedly tested the church. An earthquake in 1631 threatened the structure. It regained its parish status in 1689. The Santa Marta earthquakes of the 1770s inflicted severe damage.

After the capital moved in 1776 the church served as a temporary parish. Then it merged with Candelaria and Los Remedios. Together they formed the Parroquia de San José in 1804. They operated from the ruins of the Cathedral.

More earthquakes struck in the 19th century. By 1874 San Sebastián was abandoned. The 1976 earthquake nearly obliterated it leaving only the facade mostly intact. Reconstruction efforts used brick. This highlights a new chapter in its architectural story.

San Sebastián also holds cultural significance. The esteemed Jesuit poet Rafael Landívar was baptized here. Theologian Antonio Vázquez de Espinosa mentioned it in 1620. This underscores its importance and wide-reaching religious services.

Consider for a moment the people who sought solace here. They prayed within these walls. They celebrated life’s milestones. Even in ruins the Parroquia San Sebastián stands as a testament to enduring faith. It is a reminder of Antigua’s rich history. Now look closely at the brickwork a reminder of rebirth from the ruins.
