From the ashes of war, a beacon of hope emerged. The Parroquia San Roque y Santa María Micaela stands before us, a testament to resilience and community spirit. The church’s story intertwines with the extraordinary life of Santa María Micaela and the dedicated efforts of the Asociación Católica de Señoras de Madrid. Doña Josefa Salamanca y Wall, Marquesa de Hinojares, generously donated funds in 1935 to purchase land for the school and church. This land, along the former Camino de las Ánimas (now Vía Carpetana), held a small church dedicated to San Roque, built in 1914. The addition of Santa María Micaela’s name honors the canonization of Micaela Desmaissières y López de Dicastillo in 1934. The Parroquia San Roque y Santa María Micaela became a cornerstone of the Carabanchel neighborhood. It offered a free Catholic school for girls. Dedicated women traveled from central Madrid to teach catechism, reading, and writing. The school, initially known as “Escuelas de Niñas de Santa María Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento,” began its mission during challenging times. The Spanish Civil War left the building and church in ruins. Resourceful families, known as “Los Veinte Cuartos,” created makeshift homes within the damaged structure. The Asociación Católica de Señoras tirelessly worked to rebuild, addressing the pressing issue of child hunger. By 1943, a revitalized building housed four schools, a two-story structure on Calle López Mezquía, and the restored Parroquia San Roque y Santa María Micaela. The Daughters of Charity, starting in 1943, played a vital role in the community’s recovery. They provided meals, education, and medical care, embodying the spirit of San Vicente and Santa Luisa. By 1950, additional schools and a boarding house catered to hundreds of children, operating alongside the Parroquia San Roque y Santa María Micaela. Evening classes for adults further expanded the church’s reach in the community. Later, the school, renamed “Sagrado Corazón,” continued its growth. It received official authorization in 1971 and further expansions in the 1970s. The Parroquia San Roque y Santa María Micaela, more than just a church, represents a powerful symbol of resilience. It emerged from devastation to become a vital center for education and community support. Its story echoes the enduring spirit of those who dedicated themselves to its creation and growth.
