“A church in Madrid, or one in Venezuela?” That’s the question that might pop into your head when you first hear about Parroquia San Juan María Vianney. Today, we’re focusing on a church with the same name in Madrid.
This church shares its name with another Iglesia San Juan María Vianney. That one is far away in the rural community of La Media Legua, Venezuela. It is about two and a half hours from Caracas. This Venezuelan church serves about 200 people. Many travel there on foot. The church even has plans for bedrooms for spiritual retreats.
Now, let’s turn our attention back to the Parroquia San Juan María Vianney. It stands in the vibrant city of Madrid. While we might not have the same detailed construction notes as its Venezuelan counterpart, its presence here is equally important. It is a testament to faith and community.
The Madrid church shares its name with a saint. That saint is San Juan María Vianney. He was also known as the Cura de Ars. This name reflects the dedication and spiritual guidance offered within its walls. It also echoes the values of the parish it represents.
In 1949, a new parish was founded in Sants. It was named Sant Joan Mª. Vianney by the then Bishop of Barcelona, Dr. Gregori Modrego. Mn. Josep Mendoza was appointed by the bishop to carry out the task. After three months, it was inaugurated in the lower part of Alcolea Street 107.
In May of the same year, land was found for the construction of the new temple. Some land in “Can Mantega” agricultural farm. On June 22, 1952, Dr. Modrego blessed and laid the first stone of the current temple.
The interior of the temple is very original. It is supported by six parabolic arches. They give it the shape of an inverted keel. The image of the Saint is the work of the sculptor Jaume Sugrañes. Little by little the Tabernacle, the Via Crucis, the saints, the Holy Christ were acquired.
In 1968 Mn. Mendoza passed away after a long illness. It was the festival of all saints. On November 27, 1968, Mn. Jordi Boltà took possession as Rector. He was ordained in 1952. On November 27, 1999, the 50th anniversary of the Parish was celebrated. On October 3, 2004, Mn. R. Octavi Sánchez i Valero took possession as the new pastor.
