“A church born amidst brick kilns and sprawling estates.” That’s the humble origin story of Parroquia San Juan Bosco. We stand before a testament to faith, a structure that echoes with the spirit of its patron, St. John Bosco. Parroquia San Juan Bosco wasn’t always this grand edifice. Its roots lie in the burgeoning neighborhood of Alto de Extremadura. In 1965, the Archbishop of Madrid, Casimiro Morcillo, saw a need. The Santa Cristina Parish was overflowing. He decided to divide it, creating a new spiritual home for the growing community. On August 27, 1965, Parroquia San Juan Bosco was officially born, nestled within the walls of the Salesian San Miguel Arcángel School. For almost 35 years, the school served as the parish’s temporary home. Imagine the lively atmosphere, the echoes of prayers mingling with the sounds of learning. But the dream of a dedicated space persisted. The community yearned for a sanctuary that truly reflected their devotion. Finally, on January 29, 2000, that dream became reality. A new temple opened its doors, a modern marvel designed for both worship and community engagement. The inauguration was a grand affair, graced by the presence of Father Juan Becchi, the Salesian Superior Major. The very next day, Cardinal Antonio Mária Rouco Varela led the solemn dedication ceremony. Even Madrid’s mayor, José María Álvarez del Manzano, attended, highlighting the Parroquia’s importance to the city. Look up at the imposing cross that greets you at the entrance. It’s a beacon of faith, a symbol of Christ the Redeemer. It proclaims the parish’s presence to the entire Alto de Extremadura neighborhood. Parroquia San Juan Bosco isn’t just a building. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
