Established in 1892 the Parroquia San Juan Bautista de la Concepción has a rich history. Initially located in the old village of Canillas its first church was a chapel owned by the Marquesses of Portugalete. Imagine the bustling life of that small village. The parish boundaries were those of Canillas itself. This included areas like Carretera de Aragón La Bomba and many others. It covered a vast area between present-day Calle de Alcalá M-30 López de Hoyos and M-40. In 1930 the parish moved to a chapel owned by the Marchioness of Amboage in Cerro de la Cabaña. Canillas became part of Madrid in 1949. The growing population led to divisions. In 1956 the Parroquia de la Santísima Trinidad was created. Other parishes were later created from this one including San Alejandro and others. A further division in 1966 led to the creation of San Pablo de la Cruz and San Jacinto now known as Santa María del Cervellón. The Parroquia San Juan Bautista de la Concepción played a vital role in the development of this part of Madrid. Its history mirrors the evolution of the city’s outskirts. Today the church stands as a testament to that history. It serves the community on Calle de Camarena a reminder of its enduring legacy. The parish’s current boundaries extend from the confluence of Avenida de América and Avenida de la Paz following Avenida de la Paz northwards to Calle Allende Salazar. It continues along this street to Arturo Soria then south to Avenida de América back to the starting point. The Parroquia San Juan Bautista de la Concepción stands as a silent witness. It has watched the growth and change of Madrid. Its history echoes through its walls. It is a place of faith and community. It is more than just a building. It is a living part of Madrid’s story.
