Parroquia Purísima Concepción

In 1563 Bishop Francisco Marroquín had a vision. He saw a convent rising on this very spot. His dream though took time to manifest. The Parroquia Purísima Concepción wasn’t built overnight. Four sisters from the Order of the Immaculate Conception finally arrived from Mexico in 1620. They established Nuestra Señora de la Concepción near the Achiguate River. This was Antigua’s first female monastery. It flourished growing to over 1000 nuns students and servants. The convent became wealthy accumulating religious art. The beautiful Baroque Spanish Catholic church we see today was added in 1729. It was a testament to their faith. Sadly the complex suffered greatly in the 1751 earthquake. The 1773 tremor proved devastating completely destroying much of the structure. The church and convent were abandoned the following year.
