Was it divine intervention or merely a twist of fate? The Parroquia Nuestro Señor del Buen Consuelo stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the people of Yumbo. In 1939, the small town of Yumbo, with a population of just 6,500, rejoiced as Bishop Luis Adriano Díaz consecrated their new church. This Byzantine-style marvel, the Parroquia Nuestro Señor del Buen Consuelo, was a dream realized. The story begins, however, years earlier. A torrential downpour during an outdoor mass on September 14th, the original feast day of the Señor del Buen Consuelo, became a pivotal moment. General Alfredo Vásquez Cobo, a frequent visitor due to his involvement in the railroad construction, remarked to Father Peña, “Yumbo needs a church that reflects the stature of its people.” This sparked the initiative. The seed planted by Vásquez Cobo found fertile ground in Father Peña. Although the plans had existed since 1928, drafted by Catalan architect José Sacassas for Father José Saulo Torres, poverty and Torres’s death had stalled the project. In 1935, a renewed sense of purpose led to the formation of a committee. The construction of the Parroquia Nuestro Señor del Buen Consuelo became a community endeavor. Children carried bricks from the railyard, men worked tirelessly under the guidance of master builders Julio Simón and Manuel Castillo, and women organized fundraisers in the newly established Belalcázar park, a gift from Father Peña himself. This collective effort transformed the town, bringing people together with a common goal. Today, the Parroquia Nuestro Señor del Buen Consuelo stands tall, a symbol of resilience, faith, and unity. It is a beacon of hope and a reminder of what can be achieved when a community works hand-in-hand, guided by a shared vision.
