Could a statue truly be the most beautiful in all of Córdoba? Step inside the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores and decide for yourself. This 18th-century Baroque church, nestled in the Plaza de Capuchinos, holds a treasure. Many believe the statue of the Virgen de los Dolores within is the most beautiful in the city. It’s certainly one of the most revered Marian images in Córdoba. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, once part of the now-gone Hospital de San Jacinto, is more than just a beautiful building. It’s the canonical home of the Hermandad de los Dolores. This brotherhood venerates both the Virgen de los Dolores and the Cristo de la Clemencia. The church itself is a testament to the Baroque style, commissioned by Bishop Marcelino Siuri in 1728. Its modest façade features twin doorways. One led to the church. The other provided access to the hospital. A third stone doorway, to the right, served as the entrance to the asylum. Inside, the single-nave church boasts seven altars. The main altar holds a special place, enshrining the beloved Virgen de los Dolores. Adorned in extravagant finery, the statue is a focal point for devotion. The tabernacle beneath the statue, newer than the rest of the altarpiece, adds a touch of modern artistry to the historic setting. Flanking the tabernacle are statues of San Jacinto and San Felipe Benicio. Above them, paintings of San Juan Bautista and San Jerónimo grace the walls. A larger painting, depicting a scene from the life of San Jacinto, completes the artistic ensemble. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores offers a quiet respite. It also offers a glimpse into the rich artistic and religious heritage of Córdoba. Come and experience its unique beauty for yourself.
