This isn’t just any church. The Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor started as a simple construction barrack. Workers building in the San Fermín neighborhood used it. After they left, it became a place of worship.
For decades, it served as a place of solace. The Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor became known as Madrid’s poorest parish. Its metal roof and small size made it unique. It was a beacon of hope.
The church is small only 30 square meters. However, its heart is immense. It represents the wave of rural immigrants. They came to Madrid in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Now, it welcomes Latin Americans and Eastern Europeans.
Inside the Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor, simplicity shines. Parishioners keep it clean. Flowers adorn the space. Benches are neatly aligned. The altar cloths are spotless. It reflects the honest spirit of its community.
The church needed more space. A nearby bar closed due to the financial crisis. The parish bought it with help from the Archdiocese. It became a space for catechesis and meetings.
Father Carlos Mario Toro leads the congregation. He is a Colombian member of the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity. This community works worldwide. They serve in Singapore, Moscow, and Cameroon.
The people of San Fermín are hard working. They wanted a temple that honored God more fittingly. The Church in Madrid tried to help. However, a legal battle delayed construction. The Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor became an innocent victim.
But there is good news. A new building is coming. It will rise about 100 meters away. It will include a temple, priest housing, and parish halls. The community will say goodbye to the old barrack. Yet, memories will remain.

On July 20, 1972, the church was officially established. Cardinal Tarancón named it Madre del Buen Pastor. In 2007, the City Council signed land deeds. This paved the way for the new parish complex.
In 2007, the Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor was entrusted to the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity. The church serves around 15000 people. Most are immigrants from Latin America and Eastern Europe. Social work is a priority.
Alimentos Solidarios helps those at risk. It provides food and support. The Centro Educacional del Menor aids children with learning. These projects extend beyond the parish. They help anyone in need.
On October 1 in 2016, Archbishop Carlos Osoro blessed the new church. The new Parroquia Madre del Buen Pastor has a temple for 380 people. There is also a chapel for 80. The buildings connect through a courtyard.
