From rural fields to a bustling neighborhood, the Parroquia Jesús Divino Obrero stands as a testament to the spirit of community. The church sits in the heart of El Ejido, a neighborhood once known for its undeveloped fields and scattered farmhouses. Imagine this area 80 years ago: a patchwork of small plots and dirt roads, near the vanished Church of San Salvador de Nido. The transformation of this humble landscape began in the late 1950s with the unplanned construction of residential homes, including the Casas de la Fundición.
The real growth, however, was driven by housing cooperatives. These groups, particularly the Jesús Divino Obrero cooperative, spearheaded by Restituto Ruano and his dedicated team, envisioned a new community. The Parroquia Jesús Divino Obrero, built on the land of Mr. Selva, became the heart of this burgeoning neighborhood. Its social and religious influence was so profound that El Ejido became known as the Barrio de Jesús Divino Obrero. Even before the church building itself, a brotherhood dedicated to Jesús Divino Obrero existed, officially established on April 2nd, 1955.
The Bishop of León, Luis Almarcha Hernández, recognizing the religious needs of the growing community, decreed the establishment of the Parroquia Jesús Divino Obrero on February 22, 1962. This official act carved the new parish from the existing San Juan de Regla parish. Its boundaries were defined by Calle de San Guillermo to the north, the Torio River to the east, the existing boundaries of San Juan de Regla with Santa Ana to the south, and Calle San Juan to the west. Interestingly, the new parish inherited the endowment of the submerged San Martín de Lancara parish in the Archdiocese of Luna, lost to the waters of the Luna River dam.
The Parroquia Jesús Divino Obrero became more than just a church building. It became a focal point, bringing together not only the various housing cooperatives, but also the diverse social and religious movements of the time. The rural charm of the area, though transformed by urbanization, continues to resonate within the neighborhood. The people who settled here, many from rural areas seeking better opportunities, brought with them their traditions and strong faith, shaping the character of the community around the Parroquia Jesús Divino Obrero. This church stands as a reminder of the power of community, faith, and the transformative journey from farmland to a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Madrid.
