“Did you know that the Parroquia de Santa Matilde wasn’t always a parish?”
Let’s explore this unique church. The Parroquia de Santa Matilde has a fascinating past. It began as part of a school complex.
In 1928, a competition was held. Architects presented designs for a school building. This school was funded by Doña Pilar de la Mata y Martínez’s foundation. The foundation focused on social and educational causes. Today, that building houses the Parroquia de Santa Matilde. It also hosts various Cáritas Madrid facilities.
King Alfonso XIII himself inaugurated the school complex. This grand opening occurred on June 7, 1930. Many prominent figures attended. The complex featured a large chapel at its center. This chapel served the school. It also opened its doors to local residents on Sundays. They could attend services there.
However, the Parroquia de Santa Matilde didn’t officially exist until 1966. D. Ramón Gadea became its first parish priest. The school operated until the late 1960s.
Since then, the Parroquia de Santa Matilde has shared its space. It coexists with the Episcopal Vicariate I. It also shares with the Cáritas Diocesana of Madrid.
Currently, the buildings are undergoing extensive renovations. The aim is to provide better service. This will benefit the neighborhood and all of Madrid.
If you want to attend a service, the usual schedule has been back in place since September 7.
The Parroquia de Santa Matilde stands as a testament to community service. It evolved from a school chapel. Now, it’s a vital part of Madrid’s religious and social fabric. The parish’s current priests are D. Antonio Fernández Velasco who is the pastor and D. Elías Roperto Infante who is the parochial vicar.
