In 2009, a simple prefabricated structure hosted the first mass at Parroquia de Santa María Josefa del Corazón de Jesús. It was the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, a humble beginning for a parish destined for greater things. Today, we stand before the realized vision of that early faith. The Parroquia de Santa María Josefa del Corazón de Jesús, consecrated in 2012 by Cardinal José Cobo, Archbishop of Madrid, serves the burgeoning community of Ensanche de Vallecas. This vibrant parish, entrusted to the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 2011, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in a rapidly growing neighborhood. The consecration ceremony was a spectacle of faith. A procession bearing a relic of Saint Mary Joseph of the Heart of Jesus led the way. The Archbishop then blessed the church, sprinkling holy water on the walls, and placed the relic within the altar. The air filled with the scent of incense as the altar and walls were anointed and illuminated, marking the official dedication of this sacred space. The Parroquia de Santa María Josefa del Corazón de Jesús boasts three chapels. These are dedicated to Saint Joseph, Saint Mary Joseph of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Divine Mercy. In the entrance hall, a statue of the Virgen de la Estrella and a figure of Christ offer a warm welcome to all who enter. The church’s commitment to community outreach is evident in their efforts to involve immigrant families and provide activities for all ages. Despite facing financial constraints that have delayed the completion of the lower level and parish offices, the church thrives. It offers a perpetual adoration space with the Blessed Sacrament exposed from Monday to Friday. Catechism classes continue in the original prefabricated building, a reminder of the parish’s humble beginnings.
