Do you know that the Parroquia de San Gabriel de la Dolorosa began with humble roots? It started in a modest chapel offered by the Servant Sisters of the Gospel in 1965. The sisters had been providing support to the vulnerable in this area since 1957.
Originally named San Vicente Mártir, the parish underwent a transformation. On November 11, 1965, it was renamed San Gabriel de la Dolorosa. This change marked a new chapter for the growing community.
The area known today as Pinar de Chamartín was once called Valdevivar. In 1965, Archbishop Morcillo of Madrid requested the Pasionistas to come to this humble neighborhood of immigrants. From the beginning, alongside pastoral work, the desire to construct a new temple grew. This area of Madrid was rapidly expanding.
It took many procedures but finally, on February 27, 1994, Mñor. Ángel Suquía dedicated the new parochial temple. The architect D. Francisco Coello de Portugal o.p designed it.
Since September 27, 1994, the community grew and incorporated professed students. These students had previously resided in the Alcalá de Henares community. This union began a dual mission. They were to serve the parochial community. They were also responsible for attending to the formation process of young Pasionistas.
Today, the Parroquia de San Gabriel remains deeply involved. Its mission includes evangelization and incorporating lay members. It is also involved in Cáritas and missionary awareness. The Community supports the Pasionistas Sisters of the cloister. Approximately 13,000 people live within the parish’s territory.
